XWiki Enterprise is dead, long live XWiki!

With the release of 9.5.1 we have dropped the XWiki Enterprise distribution and instead we exposed the Flavor mechanism.  For those unfamiliar with the concept, a "flavor" is a collection of extensions corresponding to a specific use case or theme. Read more about the changes brought by the release.

Now when you install or create a new wiki you will be able to choose the flavor you want to use. Currently we provide a default flavor, called XWiki Standard which contains largely what XWiki Enterprise used to contain, but the difference is that you are no longer limited to it.

We expect in the future that the community members will provide additional flavors built on top of XWiki and you could select between them when customizing your wiki. Imagine a flavor for application development, one for documentation, one for procedures or even a flavor created especially for your team, that streamlines your workflow and removes clutter. You can pick any extensions combination from our Extensions Repository and let your imagination fly.

Currently we are still at the beginning and there is still documentation to be written on how to create the flavors. In case the community is interested, in the future we could provide a user interface for creating a flavor.

Let us know what you think about these changes and start thinking about flavors. What use case would your flavor cover? As you know, XWiki is the most customizable and extensible wiki out there and flavors are one extra step towards that direction.
